CERVICAL CANCER TREATMENT

Statistics from the National Cancer Institute show that the rates for new cases of cervical cancer have not dropped significantly over the last decade. The five-year relative survival rate is 66.7%. At Personalized Hematology-Oncology, we are applying advanced genetic testing to improve survival rates and patients’ quality of care and life. Our oncologists custom-tailor a therapy protocol for each patient’s specific cervical cancer gene profile, delivering expert cancer treatment in a caring, compassionate environment.

About Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer can occur when abnormal cells grow and spread on the cervix. Prognosis for patients with cervical cancer is often positive, as it can be detected very early with regular screenings. A routine pap smear can detect abnormalities and sometimes identify pre-cancerous cells before the cancer develops. Most cervical cancers can be classified as squamous cell carcinomas or adenocarcinomas, although less common types do exist. Squamous cell carcinomas account for nearly 90% of all cases.

Cervical Cancer Risk & Prevention

Cervical cancer is unique in that women who do not have risk factors rarely develop the disease. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the largest risk factor, especially in individuals suffering from chronic infection. There are no cures for HPV, but vaccines have been successful in stopping its spread. Other sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and chlamydia, have also been linked with cases of cervical cancer. As with many medical conditions, individuals who limit alcohol, maintain physical activity, and live a healthy lifestyle will have a smaller risk.

Cervical Cancer Risk Factors

  • History of sexually transmitted diseases like HPV, HIV and chlamydia
  • Smoking
  • Long-term use of birth control pills or IUDs
  • Multiple full-term pregnancies
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancies before the age of 17
  • Family history

Cervical Cancer Symptoms

Cervical cancer in the early stages typically produces no symptoms but can still be detected through routine pap smears. Symptoms of late-stage cervical cancer can include vaginal bleeding between periods or after intercourse, watery or bloody vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain.

Cervical Cancer Early Detection & Diagnosis

Cervical cancer is often found early through routine pap smear exams and can be confirmed through a biopsy of the cervix. If you experience any symptoms of late-stage cervical cancer, it is imperative to schedule an exam with your physician.
